Since the Second Empire, SCHMIT TRADITION has collaborated on large-scale projects. It has become a benchmark in luxury furniture design at the service of major brands in France and internationally.
The company
Founded in 1818 by Frédéric Schmit, a carpenter of Luxembourg origin, SCHMIT transferred to Paris in 1828. The company specializes in the creation of very high-end period furniture for government buildings, but also for owners of private mansions or castles.
During the Second Empire, Frédéric Schmit had the opportunity to join forces with the cabinetmaker to Napoleon III and the brand became Schmit & Piollet. The company’s influence grew to an international scale and its creations were awarded gold medals at the Expositions Universelles in 1878 and 1889. In 1919, the two brothers Jean and Jacques Schmit took over the company and founded Schmit & Co. They began to expand their activity to the layout of department stores, as well as luxury ocean liners. In 1935, they designed the lounges and cabins for the famous ocean liner the S.S. Normandie. In 1939, they moved to central France, in Laugère, where the manufacturing workshop is still present today. After World War II, the company returned to the Paris area to settle in Saint-Maur. Major development projects have been entrusted to them, such as the Bank of France, the Paris Opera, Orly Airport and the first towers of La Défense and the Tour Maine-Montparnasse in Paris. In 1980, after the company was split into two separate divisions (industry and luxury), the company was renamed SCHMIT TRADITION for projects in the high-end sector.
Know-how
A true flagship in luxury design, SCHMIT TRADITION perpetuates its know-how rich in 200 years of history and prestigious achievements. The company provides services to luxury homes, offeringits expertise in “Made in France” furniture, crafted with the highest standards of artisanal excellence. The layout of these prestigious places is carried out in close collaboration with the architects and interior designers behind the concepts. SCHMIT TRADITION, with its integrated design office, brings these concepts to life by providing technical solutions and material proposals that meet aesthetic considerations. Thanks to its in-house prototyping workshop, customers can more easily validate technical decisions. And its manufacturing workshop in Laugère, with around 30 cabinetmakers, exemplifies French know-how. The company, originally a specialist in carpentry, has adapted to the demands of its customers by incorporating materials such as glass, metal and fabric into its products, collaborating with subcontractors who are experts in each field.
As another complementary activity, SCHMIT TRADITION also offers to manage all types of finishing work. Sometimes, the company only carries out the finishing work or does so in addition to the layout.
SCHMIT TRADITION seeks to develop its offerings for the mid-range sector, formerly supported by the Schmit Industrie brand.
